The Art of Reinvention: Turning Waste into New Materials

In the realm of sustainable design, production, and marketing, Nature's Legacy and Floreia are leading the way with their innovative materials and commitment to resource efficiency. Long before sustainability became a popular trend, Pedro "Pete" H. Delantar Jr. and Catherine V. Delantar, the CEO and co-founder of Nature's Legacy Eximport, Inc., were already practicing green initiatives. By repurposing waste from their manufacturing process, they created Floreia®, a subsidiary company focused on transforming excess materials into fashion accessories and decorative pieces.

Discovering the Opportunity

The Delantars found inspiration in the agroforest debris that accumulated on their recently acquired property. Instead of burning it as firewood, they saw potential in recycling and repurposing these materials. This sparked a series of innovative inventions, leading to the development of four patented materials: Stonecast, Naturescast, Nucast, and Marmorcast.

The Innovative Materials

Stonecast, made from upcycled crushed limestone, imitates the appearance of limestone and coral stone. Naturescast utilizes recycled wood and non-timber forest debris, resulting in a cork-like texture and completely biodegradable and recyclable products. Nucast, created from recycled paper composite, replicates the textures of stone and metal while being exceptionally lightweight. Marmorcast, crafted using high-grade cast polymer with polyester resin, offers a mirror-like finish, all produced through sustainable methods.

Versatile Applications

Despite their different compositions, these materials find applications in a wide range of products, including home furnishings, lighting fixtures, packaging, and more. The creation process involves multiple stages, including ideation, sketching, designing, model and mold making, prototyping, sampling, and dry runs. Each product takes months to develop, allowing for refinement and extensions.

The Sustainable Approach

Nature's Legacy holds over 35 intellectual properties and constantly explores new ways to repurpose raw materials. Sustainability is the cornerstone of their business model. According to Delantar, sustainable materials regenerate over time, while sustainable products are made from rapidly renewable resources with minimal environmental impact. Nature's Legacy embodies these principles by developing sustainable materials and employing eco-friendly processes.

B Corporation Certification and 360° Sustainability Ethos

Both Nature's Legacy and Floreia are B Corporation-certified sustainable manufacturing companies. They align their goals with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and follow a 360° Sustainability ethos. This includes providing support and recreational spaces for artisans while minimizing their carbon footprint through practices such as carpooling and reduced transportation use.

Floreia's "Circle of Life" System

Floreia's unique "circle of life" system contributes to waste reduction and provides livelihood opportunities for workers. The brand hires stay-at-home mothers from mountainous areas to create handmade decorative pieces using Naturescast and Nucast excess materials. The drying process is powered by natural air and sunlight, further reducing their carbon footprint.

Leaders in Sustainable Design

Nature's Legacy and Floreia have established themselves as leaders in sustainable design and production. Their commitment to innovation and resource efficiency sets an example for businesses worldwide, demonstrating the possibilities of upcycling, reusing, and repurposing materials to create a more sustainable future.

Nature's Legacy and Floreia's journey of transforming waste into new materials exemplifies the art of reinvention. By harnessing creativity and sustainable practices, they are making a positive impact on the environment while contributing to the development of a circular economy.
