Celebrating Culture and Agriculture: SM City Consolacion Hosts the First Tangkong Festival

In a vibrant celebration of local culture and agricultural heritage, the Barangay Lamac SK Council in Consolacion proudly presented its inaugural Tangkong Festival on August 12. The event took place on the spacious open grounds of SM City Consolacion, a fitting venue that echoed the festival's essence of community unity and shared traditions.

The term "Lamac," from which the barangay derives its name, finds its roots in the word "Lamakan," signifying "Swamp." As far back as 1925, the region was characterized by these lush, marshy terrains, teeming with a diverse array of plant and animal species, most notably the Tangkong. The Tangkong plant, a vital part of the ecosystem, has been nurtured and harvested by the people of Barangay Lamac for generations.

Known for cultivating Tangkong crops that grace the markets of Metro Cebu, the inhabitants of Barangay Lamac have witnessed the positive impact of their efforts. The bounty of Tangkong not only provides families with a precious commodity but also supports educational pursuits, aiding students in their academic journeys.

A lively street dance parade marked the commencement of the festival, commencing at the Lamac barangay court. The procession weaved its way through the vibrant streets, from Purok 3 to Purok 2, culminating at the grand stage set within the premises of SM City Consolacion. This vibrant display of dance and energy symbolized the community's spirit and unity, celebrating the ties that bind them.

One of the highlights of the event was the crowning of the first-ever Tangkong Festival Queens. The following young women were crowned with pride and honor: Nicole Saycon, Shem Macario, Phoebe Mag-asin, Juliet Sabay, and Grazel Faith Pitogo. Their representation embodies the festival's message of beauty, grace, and tradition.

For those eager to stay connected with the latest happenings and promotions at SM City Consolacion, the mall's official Facebook page, "SM City Consolacion (Official)," is the place to be. As the festival concluded, its vibrant memories lingered, echoing the strength of community bonds and the vitality of preserving age-old customs. The Tangkong Festival stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of culture and agriculture, a cherished tradition sure to be celebrated for years to come.
